Machu Picchu is Peru's main tourist attraction; the citadel is located geographically in the valley of Huatanay River, to the east of the depression formed by the mountains Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu in the Central Andes in southern Peru.

The district of Machu Picchu is within the limits of the province of Urubamba ,Cusco, the citadel itself is located northwest of Cusco, at a distance of only 110 kilometers , geographic location has angular coordinates placed in the position as latitude and longitude are 13 ' 23 " and 72 ' 32" respectively, to the west of the terrestrial globe , to the west of the meridian of Greenwich , in terms of location of sea level , it is located at 2450 meters above sea level , the highest point of the citadel is the Central Square in Machu Picchu with a height of 2490 meters above the sea.

The entire area has been divided into:

  • Mountain Area: Formed by a series of plateaus and mountains over 5000 meters as the Salkantay (6271 m.) Tucarhuay (5910 m.) among others, the Lower latitudes are the slopes with no more than 4000 m altitude, there’s rain in this area for periods.
  • Forest Zone: Includes the jungle to Machu Picchu, between 800 to 2000 meters above sea level,it is characterized by its high humidity allowing the proliferation of vegetation.
  • Urban areas: Set up the citadel of Machu Picchu , hot springs, the village, as well as archaeological sites included within the 10 acres .
